Artist's Description

The Wintu Legend of Two Faces tells of a beautiful maiden named Rippling Water. She was Chief Lakadowa's love. Another warrior killed her out of jealousy. Chief Lakadowa avenged her death by killing her murderer, but was himself mortally wounded in the battle. His dying wish was that Rippling Water could always be near Mount Shasta, the mountain she loved. And that he, Lakadowa, could watch over her for eternity. Here, we see the beautiful maiden reclining forever atop Mount Shasta. The topmost peak is her nose and her hair flows softly down the south slope of the mountian. See my blog for the full story and overlays of the faces. (Link is at the top of the page.)

About Loree Johnson

Loree Johnson

Loree Johnson is a nature photographer and passionate advocate for the preservation and restoration of ecosystems and wildlife habitat. She discovered a love for photography late in life at the age of 50 while living in Yreka, California. The desire to travel and document nature induced her to take an early retirement from a tedious desk job and go on the road. During her travels through the Western U.S. for six years (2014-2020) she collected a wealth of rewarding experiences and unique photographs. She volunteered for several National Wildlife Refuges along the way. Loree experiences profound joy in nature, and believes that all people should have the opportunity to experience it, too. You can connect with her on facebook. Or visit her...
