Description
Leucism is a genetic trait that inhibits the production of pigment. Unlike albino animals, leucistic animals exhibit some pigment, only lighter than their non-leucistic counterparts. This is a leucistic juvenile bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) seen at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge in California. Scientists estimate that only one in 5,000-10,000 wild animals carry this trait.
