Description
The Wintu Legend of Two Faces tells of a beautiful maiden named Rippling Water. She was Chief Lakadowa's love. Another warrior killed her out of jealousy. Chief Lakadowa avenged her death by killing her murderer, but was himself mortally wounded in the battle. His dying wish was that Rippling Water could always be near Mount Shasta, the mountain she loved. And that he, Lakadowa, could watch over her for eternity. He is seen here, in the face of the cliff at Castle Crags, guarding his maiden on a cold, gray day. He appears very resolute in his position and keeps a close watch on Rippling Water. See my blog for the full story and overlays of the faces. (Link is at the top of the page.)
