Description
Middle Falls of the McCloud River in Northern California creating a heavy mist due to high flows as a result of the "atmospheric river" weather event of 2012. This area received nearly ten inches of rain in less than a week, causing rivers and streams to flood. In this image, the flow has diminished considerably from the peak, which was nearly two feet higher. Even so, the river is still flowing at levels that eclipse the typical spring runoff. One can normally see through the water at Middle Falls and make out the vegetation which grows behind the waterfall. In summer months, this is a popular destination for hikers and fishermen. On this day, there was nobody in sight and the only sound was the rumbling of the water as it tumbled over the rocks. Heavy rains in December are not the norm for this area as it is usually much colder and precipitation falls in the form of snow.
